Cleaning a firearm is a serious matter — it extends its service life and helps maintain its original technical performance over a longer period of time. Lack of proper cleaning leads to fouling and residue buildup inside the barrel, which can result in a loss of muzzle velocity and even permanent barrel damage.

Only brass cleaning rods properly clean a firearm — steel rods may corrode and cause the opposite effect (moreover, their hardness is similar to that of the barrel and may scratch it). Plastic rods, instead of cleaning the barrel, may contaminate it — wearing down against the rifling and leaving fine debris behind.
